Chapter Eighteen

COLD SLUSH tried to work its way into Caleb’s boots. It seemed unreasonable they had another night patrol, but at least it was slightly warmer than last time. It should have been good news, but instead it had warmed enough that the snow had melted into a sloppy layer of slush. Everything was wet and messy, and everyone was at each other’s throats.

Jo wanted to find something to blow up like when they had rescued the Knights, but nothing had obliged her. Temple was unusually surly, especially for someone who just had his mother show up, something Caleb knew he had been looking forward to. He wondered if Temple had run into the rest of his family when no one else was looking. Agni was quieter than usual, probably half-frozen. The one thing Caleb knew for sure was the wet was working against them. If it got into their boots, they’d end up with a version of trench foot, which was the last thing anyone needed.

“Did you see that?” Agni hissed, breaking in to Caleb’s thoughts.

“What?” Caleb hoped that it would be something helpful, like one of their quarry trying to pick up a prostitute. He was disappointed some of the other higher-ups didn’t agree one of the better ways to get ahead of the Astaroth cult was to lure in the people culling the victims. He knew Taglioferro was still working on it. He didn’t think they’d just run into the devil wandering the streets of Pittsburgh.

“Night birds. They just went into the museum,” Agni replied.

“The museum is closed,” Caleb protested. “Are you sure they weren’t just going up into the eaves?”

“The blackbirds went through the wall,” Agni insisted.

“Could be Caim’s minions. He also is an oracle demon. It could be connected. Temple, Jo, we might have demons in the Carnegie Museum,” Caleb called to their partners across the street.

“Isn’t it going to be hard to track anything in the museum? It’s huge.” Jo jogged across the brick street.

“Not to mention creepy after dark.” Temple shuddered for emphasis, then asked, “Do we have a key for that?”

As team leader Caleb had skeleton keys for many places. The museum was one of them. He jogged across the road, happy to be going inside even if it meant tangling with security guards and Agni’s flock of blackbirds. At least maybe his toes would regain some feeling to them.

The guard appeared almost as soon as Caleb got the door open. The man’s eyes seemed to vibrate in their sockets. “Big birds with swords!” he babbled, pushing past Caleb and the others to flee into the night.

“Birds with swords?” Jo asked. “Is the man daffy?”

“No, it’s probably Caim, another prince of hell. These would be his minions unless you see one nearly as high as your waist. That would be Caim himself. Don’t point out he’s short. He has no sense of humor,” Caleb said, drawing his sword. “Temple, use your handgun instead of the tommy. No one is going to thank us if we blow holes in the Italian marble.
